With world class science and state-of-the-art facilities, product innovation and development is integral to what we do.
What you’ll be part of
In 2013, having trebled our group-wide R&D budget in the space of only five years, we spent over £160m on R&D, using it to innovate, develop and evaluate the next generation of tobacco and nicotine products. Ours is industry-leading science that both shows our commitment to tobacco harm reduction and our championing of informed consumer choice.
We’ve been showing this commitment to R&D for some 50 years now and we regularly collaborate with colleagues across the business, in areas including Legal & External Affairs (LEX) and Marketing, who we work with on product innovation and consumer insights. We also have close links with many leading suppliers and specialist consultants, in addition to fellow researchers at world class universities in countries such as the US, Russia, Italy and Brazil. These partnerships and collaborations allow us to stay agile in a rapidly changing marketplace.
In everything we do, and with everyone we work with, we’re always transparent about our science. We publish details of our research on bat-science.com and the results of our studies in peer-reviewed journals. We also contribute to debates about tobacco harm reduction at conferences around the world.
What you’ll bring
Your expertise could be in one of many fields, as the science we apply is complex, challenging and spread across many disciplines. Crucially, we look for team players with commercial prowess to go with their powers of analysis. Ambitious and brave individuals who lead through the change and innovation they help to effect, and whose agile and strategic brand of thinking always has the consumer foremost in mind.
What you’ll get out of it
Many of the great breakthroughs in tobacco R&D are being made here. You’ll work within a bold, progressive and transparent environment built on world class science. No wonder the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scorecard ranks us first in the EU tobacco sector and in the top 10 per cent of all EU companies.
During the past five years, we’ve invested over £25m in creating better work and leisure spaces for all of our people – at both our main research base in Southampton and at our satellite centre in Cambridge.
As you’d expect within a global R&D function that continues to grow, year on year, our people are involved across a dazzling variety of projects, in roles including: Chemists and Biochemists, Biologists and Geneticists, Toxicologists and Biotechnologists, Microbiologists and Statisticians…and many more.
Join us in any one of these specialisms, and you could find yourself leading a team doing some amazing things. Such as developing a completely new-to-market product. Focusing on world class science and new analytical methods. Or taking responsibility for the global stewardship of our entire product portfolio.
Whatever your professional focus, we’ll offer you all the support and development you need – from the very first day you join us.
That’s why you can expect to thrive within a fluid and dynamic work environment, where – whether you choose to follow a technical or a managerial career path – the strong leadership you display, from either a scientific or a human perspective will be highly valued and richly rewarded.
