“My move to BAT was one I was ready for. I’d been at my previous company, a top global accounting firm, for almost four years, and I needed a new and different experience. But I didn’t want to move for moving’s sake: it had to be a reputable employer where I could carry on developing my career and, of course, keep on learning.

“That was 14 years ago, and now I live on the other side of the world in Vietnam. I never thought I’d ever stay with one company as long as I’ve stayed at BAT. Like most young professionals, I thought I’d be here for five years at the most before moving on to the next challenge.

“But the fact is, the challenges have kept on coming. When the Caribbean area of our business was merged with Central America, I was asked to move to Costa Rica to help bring the different finance processes together. Being a mother who takes her personal duties seriously, my first thought was to turn it down. But my family and colleagues all urged me to take the plunge. And I’m glad they did, because it proved to be an invaluable learning experience.

“It also opened my eyes to the sheer diversity of this company, which is something I can really appreciate. I’m from a small country that is culturally unique, Trinidad and Tobago. In Costa Rica, I was part of a team of people whose backgrounds were every bit as diverse as my own. Every day, I see these differences in the faces and in the attitudes of our people – whether they’re in the office, in the trade or in our factories.

“When I first joined BAT, I never expected to meet so many people who love where they work so much. Wherever you go in the world, you can walk into a BAT office and you just know you couldn’t be in the office of any other company. It’s a unique feeling, and it’s difficult to put into words. But you can be sure that it’s a good thing! You can also be sure that, as well as meeting great people, you’ll experience some surprises along the way. And what is life without a few surprises?”
