Head of Marketing,
Papua New Guinea
While it feels a long time ago I still remember the 3 minute conversation that I had about the Head of Marketing opportunity that was available in PNG. It didn’t take long for me to say “Yes”.
What a “Yes” it has been so far. A big cultural change for me & my whole family, leaving the comfort zone of our home and finding ourselves in one of the most diverse countries on earth (867 languages and less than 7 million people). There are massive business challenges and this means that the opportunities are equally massive. PNG itself is beautiful. The waters are blue, there is both rugged mountainous terrain and flat open spaces. The people are friendly, warm and welcoming. However, the serenity of Port Moresby is a complete contrast to the business environment which is ever changing and extremely volatile. There is a lot to be done and there doesn’t feel like there are enough hours in the day to do all the work.
International experience is key to both your professional and personal development and I can say that during the last 6 months, I have experienced the steepest learning curve of my life. You require, rather you acquire a leadership skill which is beyond imagination. Part of the learning experience is that you realise people are fundamentally the same. While there are differences and nuances, which at times can be hard to navigate, you come to understand and appreciate those differences and gain a real undertaking of the meaning of ‘strength from diversity’.
Through this experience I can truly say that the International has become very local. You find so many commonalities that you never thought existed at first. BAT is a great place to work as it truly gives people International opportunities that very few companies can offer. This not only develops you professionally, but personally and it’s an experience the while family benefits from.
